Today I was asked by another coach: “What is your Why?” “Why do you do what you do?”
I understand the purpose of the question and for those who don’t – permit me to share: When someone knows their “WHY”… it provides that individual with a clear focus… that person’s purpose…to focus on what matters to that person, what will make them to move forward, to do what needs to be done, to face the odds or climb of obstacles no matter what. German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche once stated, ‘He who has a why can endure any how.’ So when you know your why that provides you with your foundation to determine what needs to be done to complete those goals, reach for that dream, provide you with the passion, the determination to “Make your life spectacular” (as comedian Robbins Williams so nicely put it).
So to answer the presented question I will have to provide two answers… one for being a Hacker and one for being a Coach.
- Life Hacker – What is my why? Why did I become a Life Hacker?
Pain. It is a simple as that. I got to a point in my life where every morning (and I mean every morning) I would say, “I feel like I have been hit by a mac truck!” Finally enough was enough. No matter what the doctors did I wasn’t getting any better only worse. Then one day, they ran a test and the result came back indicating that I had celiac disease. And the only cure? Diet. I had to get off everything that contained gluten and even topically…toothpaste, shampoo, hand soap. Really!!! I didn’t have a choice. Either I eliminate the food or the deterioration of my health would continue. Then they found more food allergies – more pain… and one thing lead to another. So my why? I couldn’t take the pain.
2. To answer my Coaching why…
I believe in people. Really.
I know that people have it within themselves the ability to make themselves the best that they can be. And I know this to be true! To be a fact! I coach to assist my clients – so that they have the life they chose… not chosen for them by environment, parents, peers, friends, etc.
Thomas Edison stated that “a vision without execution is a hallucination…” and people have vision. People can see something bigger than themselves, and sometimes those people just need some encouragement or suggestions to get them started – to execute the strategy – the path forward. As Simon Sinek states… “It’s all find and good to have a vision. It’s all fine and good to know your why, but if you can’t execute it, then it’s no value whatsoever (Inc. Magazine Dec 4, 2012).” So if a person knows their why but doesn’t know the next step… coaching is an amazing tool / resource to get that person going – to execute that vision. I believe a person can reinvent themselves at any time! My strengths are inspiring people, my optimism, perseverance, and finding information / resources…So “why” wouldn’t I utilize those strengths? I can help people not only find their “Why” but also help them execute it…So my why? I believe in people.
So ask yourself: What is your why? And once you figure that out… and, if you need some suggestions… you know where to find me…once you have the why…make that vision a reality instead of a hallucination.
